Quizzing at home in Accelerated Reader

Based on extensive research, we can provide guidelines for the approximate number of Accelerated Reader points children should be able to earn depending on how much time they read and their reading level. Monitoring Accelerated Reader points earned by children and comparing them to the guideline values enables your child's teacher to determine how well your child is using the time provided for reading practice. If the school has Star Reading, students' scores will be accessible in Accelerated Reader, making it easier for teachers to set point targets for students. Accelerated Reader is a computer-based program that schools may use to monitor reading practice and progress. It helps teachers guide kids to books that are on kids' individual reading levels. Kids take short quizzes after reading a book to check if they've understood it.

A mom of two, she majored in English Language and Literature and worked as a substitute teacher and tutor for several years. When not writing she continues to root for the Yankees and the Giants. Sadly, the program is not available for homeschooling parents.

How do you take a quiz on Accelerated Reader?

It teaches students that all books have value, encourages them to select their own books and, through its points system, can get them challenging themselves to read more complex books. At the same time, all books listed in the program are assigned an Accelerated Reader number, which roughly corresponds to grade level. Accelerated Reader is a well-regarded and popular program used in schools across the United States and around the world, and its levelling system can be found in many bookstores and libraries. Luckily, it’s not impossible to create and implement a good reading incentive program for your homeschool. Children using Accelerated Reader choose their own books to read, rather than having one assigned to them. This makes reading a much more enjoyable experience as they can choose books that are interesting to them.

You may notice that some popular books have more points assigned to them than some classic pieces of literature. Rowling'sHarry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, for example, is a 44-point book, while Shakespeare'sMacbethis a 4-point book. As you will be aware, your child will be using Accelerated Reader software.

The research base on the benefits of guided independent reading is extensive. Students learn far more vocabulary through independent reading than we’d ever be able to teach them directly. Reading is also critical for building background knowledge, and study after study has demonstrated that prior knowledge of a topic has a much larger impact on comprehension than general reading ability.

You can access your child's Accelerated Reader information in Renaissance Home Connect from a computer with web access. You must first gain access to the program from the school. Once in the program, you can view your child's progress toward targets, points and books read to monitor your child's success. You can also access Accelerated Reader Bookfinder to search for titles of interest. In independent literature-based reading, ZPD is the range of books that will challenge a child without causing frustration or loss of motivation.

ReadingIQ is a digital library for kids ages 2-12 that contains most of the essential features that we think parents would need to build their own AR program at home. Their main drawbacks tend to be that they don’t always contain quizzes for every book they offer, which means that parents may have to seek out or create their own. Awarding students some kind of points, badges or stickers can be a fun motivator that makes reading development and practice into more of a game. All of this can be very useful in a homeschool, where many parents are often caught between wanting to encourage their children to have more freedom but also want them to develop and succeed academically. If you have more than one child in your home using Accelerated Reader, you can only see information for the child whose username and password you use.

It's great that the program is free but the book list is sooo limited. My daughter's in the 6th grade and we couldn't find quizes for the last 10 books she has read unfortunately. It also provides more detailed information to educators about how an individual student is progressing compared to grade level and gives some insight into their reading comprehension skills. In one sense, remote- and hybrid-learning environments are ideal for independent reading because there’s often more time available. Students are no longer waiting for the school bus, or standing in the cafeteria line, or going from one classroom or building to another over the course of the day. We also know that students benefit from—and like—having a daily routine, so scheduling 30 minutes of reading time into the remote school day is a win-win situation. If educators suspect that students are cheating, I’d also ask them to consider why students might feel the need to do this. AR’s purpose is to connect students with engaging books at the right level of challenge, and to provide educators with information about how well students comprehend what they’re reading.
